Depending on the chosen route and any small detours along the way, the total distance may vary slightly. <\/li><li><u><strong>\u23f1\ufe0f Time<\/strong>:<\/u> The pure hiking time is around 3 hours. With several photo and video stops as well as relaxed breaks, you should plan approximately 4 hours. <\/li><li><strong>\ud83d\udcca Ascent and Descent:<\/strong> Around 125 m (410 ft) of ascent and 379 m (1,243 ft) of descent.<\/li><li><u><strong>\ud83e\udd75 Difficulty:<\/strong><\/u> The hike is considered easy (T1) and is also suitable for strollers. The route follows wide gravel and forest paths for most of the way, with no technically difficult or exposed sections, making it a good choice for families and less experienced hikers.  <\/li><li><strong><u>\ud83d\udcc6 Best Season<\/u><\/strong>: There is no single best season, as both Lake Cauma and Lake Cresta are beautiful throughout the year, even in winter. Early autumn is especially atmospheric, with cooler mornings, occasional mist over the water, fewer visitors and no swimming admission required once the bathing season has ended. Only the loop around Lake Cresta includes sections across meadows and narrower hiking trails, but overall the route remains very comfortable to walk.  <\/li><li><strong><u>\ud83e\udd7e Equipment:<\/u><\/strong> Good hiking shoes and trekking poles are recommended. Pack some food and enough water so you can enjoy a relaxed break along the way. In early autumn, a light jacket is also a good idea, as mornings in the forest and by the lakes can be noticeably cooler.  <\/li><li><strong><u>\ud83d\udc68\u200d\ud83d\udc69\u200d\ud83d\udc67 Family Check:<\/u><\/strong> The hike is very suitable for families, as it is technically easy and includes only a few steeper sections. On warm days, the route can also be perfectly combined with a swim in Lake Cauma or Lake Cresta. <\/li><li><strong><u>\ud83d\udc15 Hiking with Dogs:<\/u><\/strong> The hike is well suited for dogs. At Lake Cauma, dogs are allowed to enter the water outside the designated swimming area, while at Lake Cresta they can swim around the lake but not in the children\u2019s swimming area or on the jetty. Any leash requirements and wildlife protection zones along the route should always be respected.  <\/li><li><strong><u>\ud83d\ude97 Getting There:<\/u><\/strong> The hike can be reached easily by public transport to Flims Waldhaus, Caumasee, or by car to the <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/r9wvcphdYaqobVCUA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parking areas above Lake Cauma<\/a><\/span><\/strong>. For the return journey, we take the bus from Trin Mulin, Crestasee back toward Flims. <\/li><li><strong><u>\ud83d\udcb0 Costs:<\/u><\/strong> The hike itself is generally free of charge. The only costs are for public transport or parking, and we paid CHF 6 for the full day at the parking area above Lake Cauma. During the swimming season, an additional entrance fee may apply for the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flimslaax.com\/en\/outdoor-activities\/mountain-lakes\/lake-cauma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official bathing area at Lake Cauma<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, while outside the bathing season in early autumn this fee no longer applies.  <\/li><li><strong><u>\ud83d\udccc Signposts &#038; Markings:<\/u><\/strong> The route is well signposted and follows SwitzerlandMobility Route 657, \u201cSenda quatter lags da Flem,\u201d for much of the hike. At Lake Cauma, the trail can follow the lakeside path before climbing back up to rejoin the main hiking route. <\/li><li><strong><u>\ud83d\udcf6 Mobile Signal:<\/u><\/strong> Since the hike never takes us far from populated areas, mobile reception is generally good along the route. In some forest sections, the signal may briefly become weaker, but it should usually be sufficient for navigation and emergencies. <\/li><li><strong><u>\ud83d\udcf8 Best Photo Spots:<\/u><\/strong> There are countless beautiful photo spots along the hike. Highlights include the viewpoint above the Lake Cauma lift with views over the lake and mountains, the spectacular <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>panorama from Il Spir<\/strong><\/span> into the Rhine Gorge, and the small tree island in Lake Cresta, which looks especially beautiful when the water is calm. <\/li><li><strong><u>\ud83e\udd8c Wildlife:<\/u><\/strong> Along the way, we spot several squirrels climbing through the trees. Around the lakes, we also come across plenty of ducks and a variety of bird species. <\/li><li><strong><u>\ud83c\udf04 Highlights:<\/u><\/strong> The main highlights are the turquoise waters of Lake Cauma, the more peaceful Lake Cresta, and the Il Spir viewpoint high above the Rhine Gorge. The combination of lakes, forest and wide-open views makes this hike especially varied and memorable. <\/li><li><strong><u>\ud83d\udca1 Tips:<\/u><\/strong> For photography, the late afternoon is ideal, when the light falls across the lakes and mountains from the side and adds more depth to the landscape. For a quieter atmosphere and fewer people, early autumn weekdays are especially recommended. <\/li><li><strong><u>\ud83c\udfe1 Accommodation &#038; Restaurants:<\/u><\/strong> There are places to stop for food and drinks directly at Lake Cauma and in Conn near Il Spir. At Lake Cresta, a small seasonal kiosk may be open during the main season but can be closed outside peak periods. Even before we properly set off, small details along the way immediately put us in the mood for the hike. Between the trees, the view suddenly opens up to the intensely turquoise water, framed by dense forest and the mountains of Graub\u00fcnden in the background.  <\/p><p>Right here, we also find the Lake Cauma lift, which makes the descent to the lake much easier. During our visit, it is still operating, but before heading down, we stop for a moment to enjoy the view. From up here, it becomes easy to understand why Lake Cauma is one of the most famous mountain lakes in Graub\u00fcnden. The main swimming season is already over, and during our visit the lake is freely accessible. Instead of busy lawns and crowds of swimmers, we experience a much quieter side of Lake Cauma.  <\/p><p>Before the main hike begins, we sit down for a coffee at the restaurant right by the water. A light layer of morning mist drifts across the lake, while the forests on the opposite shore almost disappear into it. Moments like this are exactly what make early autumn here so special for us. We first follow the path along the lakeshore and take our time discovering different views of Lake Cauma. Benches appear regularly along the trail, making them perfect for a short pause with a view across the water.  <\/p><p data-start=\"2900\" data-end=\"3124\">Especially in the early morning or later in the afternoon, the surface of the lake can become almost perfectly still. canopy. After around 1 km (0.6 mi), we reach our first viewpoint above the Rhine Gorge. Suddenly, the scenery opens up towards the Safien Valley, while far below us the Rhine winds its way through the Ruinaulta.  <\/p><p>Of course, we cannot simply walk past the bench. We sit down for a few minutes, take in the view and listen to the sound of the Rhine rushing far below. This is a good place to stop for a break and grab something to eat or drink. Since our backpacks are already well stocked, we continue straight on towards Il Spir.  <\/p><p>From Conn, it is only a short walk to one of the best-known viewpoints in the region. The viewing platform is tucked almost inconspicuously between the trees, but as soon as we step out onto it, an entirely different world opens up in front of us.<br\/>Far below, the Rhine winds its way through the Ruinaulta, the spectacular Rhine Gorge, passing pale rock walls and densely forested slopes. The view stretches deep into the gorge and becomes one of the most impressive moments of the entire hike for us.  <\/p><p data-start=\"4974\" data-end=\"5201\">Of course, we stay longer than planned. A few photos and videos are a must, but so are a few quiet minutes without a camera before we continue. From there, we head deep into the Flimserwald forest once again.<br\/>The trail follows mostly wide, easy-to-walk forest and gravel paths, with only a few steeper sections. This makes this part of the hike comfortable even for less experienced hikers.  <\/p><p data-start=\"5614\" data-end=\"5948\">After another 3 km (1.9 mi), the water of Lake Cresta, known in Romansh as Lag da Cresta, finally appears between the trees. Even though we were standing at Lake Cauma not long before, this lake feels completely different. In early autumn, however, it becomes noticeably quieter and the atmosphere changes completely. During our visit, the regular swimming season had already ended, allowing us to explore the lakeshore at a much more relaxed pace.  <\/p><p data-start=\"6239\" data-end=\"6521\">The wooden jetty by the water is especially beautiful. Here, we can sit down, enjoy the view or, on warmer days, take a refreshing swim in the clear lake. Anyone visiting outside the main season should quickly check the current swimming and admission rules before heading out.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div Away from the main swimming area, we keep discovering small hidden coves and completely new perspectives across the water. <\/p><p data-start=\"6732\" data-end=\"6985\">Our favourite photo spot is waiting on the opposite side of the lake. A tiny island where a single tree appears to rise completely on its own from the water. Together with the clear lake, surrounding forest and mountains in the background, the scene feels like a small hidden oasis.<br\/>The loop trail is noticeably more natural than the paths we have followed so far. Some sections lead along narrow hiking trails, across meadows and over exposed roots, making this part less suitable for strollers. After rainfall, the ground can also become quite muddy.   <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8801878 e-con From here, it is only a relatively short walk to the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/nqTZC15qHb8HVsmf9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trin Mulin, Crestasee bus stop<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. <\/p><p data-start=\"7471\" data-end=\"7911\">On the way, we pass through the <strong data-start=\"7514\" data-end=\"7534\">Felsbach Gorge<\/strong>, where the Flem flows over rocks and small cascades through the forest. It is another completely different landscape before we finally reach Trin Mulin and take the bus back towards Flims. The Felsbach Gorge and the Flem are located right next to Lake Cresta and form part of the hiking trails in this area.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div Instead of rushing through the route, we deliberately take our time along the way. We stop to take photos and videos, sit by the lakes, or simply pause whenever a view catches our attention.<br\/>In the end, we spend around five hours on the entire experience, including plenty of photo and video stops, relaxed breaks, and a later dinner. The actual hiking time is much shorter, but that is exactly what we love about trips like this. We want to be outdoors, slow down, enjoy the moment and take everything in. And of course, we need a few photos and videos too. \ud83d\ude09  <\/p><p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong>: For us, this hike is without question one of the most beautiful early autumn routes in Graub\u00fcnden. Few hikes combine two completely different mountain lakes, the dense Flimserwald forest and spectacular views over the Rhine Gorge in such a varied and enjoyable way. <\/p><p>The variety is exactly what makes this hike so special. In the morning, we are still standing beside the calm, turquoise waters of Lake Cauma. A little later, we look deep into the Ruinaulta from Il Spir, and by the afternoon we are already sitting beside the crystal-clear waters of Lake Cresta. <\/p><p data-start=\"9174\" data-end=\"9498\">For photographers, we recommend either starting early in the morning or heading out later in the afternoon. In the morning, the lakes are often especially calm and create beautiful reflections, while the softer side light in the afternoon adds more depth to the landscape.
