🥾 Trail Info 🔽
- 🚗 Arrival: The hike can be reached by car, but since it’s a point-to-point trail, taking the train is more convenient. The starting point is Cully station, located right in the Lavaux vineyards. Even the train ride along Lake Geneva offers spectacular views. For the return trip, you can use the stations Saint-Saphorin, Vevey, or Montreux, all of which are directly on the SBB line between Lausanne and Brig.
- 💰 Cost: The hike is free. There is no entrance fee. Anyone who wants to explore the Lavaux vineyards at a relaxed pace can use the Lavaux Express. During the ride there is interesting audio information about the region, its history and viticulture.
- 🥾 Equipment: Comfortable hiking shoes, snacks, and a camera or smartphone for panoramic shots.
- 🥵 Difficulty: An easy hike on paved paths, ideal even for inexperienced hikers. The initial ascent can be a bit demanding, but you can follow the road to the next junction as an alternative. Along the way, plenty of benches invite you to take breaks and enjoy the views.
- 📍 Start and End: The hike starts at Cully station and ends at Saint-Saphorin.
- ⏱️ Time: The pure hiking time is about 2 hours. With photo stops and breaks, you should plan around 3 to 3.5 hours in total.
- 📊 Ascent and Descent: Ascent is 120 meters (394 ft) | Descent is 120 meters (394 ft).
- 🌿 Underground: The hike is 6.8 km (4.2 mi) long, mostly on paved paths. Ideal for beginners and leisurely walkers.
- 🦌 Wildlife: Between the vineyards, you’ll often encounter cows and sheep, which are part of the typical Lavaux landscape.
- 👨👩👧 Family check: The path is family friendly and suitable for strollers as it mostly follows paved lanes. Along the way there are many benches for breaks, safe paths with little traffic and beautiful viewpoints that also delight children.
- 📌 Signposts & markings: The hiking trail is very well signposted. Getting lost is practically impossible. In addition you can follow the green route signs number 113 from SchweizMobil.
- 🐕 Hiking with dogs: Dogs are welcome and the path is easy to manage with no obstacles. Please be cautious when passing grazing cows.
- 💡 Tips: The Lavaux vineyards are worth visiting all year round, but they are at their most beautiful in autumn, when the grapes have been harvested and the slopes turn into a sea of golden colors. As seen in the photos, the afternoon and evening light is perfect for atmospheric views and photography.
- 🏡 Accommodation & Restaurants: There are no restaurants directly along the trail, but plenty of scenic benches perfect for a picnic. In villages like Saint-Saphorin or Cully, you can stop at local wine cellars to taste regional wines — for example at the Caveau des Vignerons (open until the end of October).
- 🌄 Highlights: My personal highlight was the endless Lavaux vineyards and the distinctive winegrowers’ houses creating an atmosphere reminiscent of the southern French Mediterranean coast. The sunset over Lake Geneva is especially impressive—the light and vastness almost make you feel as if you were standing by the sea.
If you’re looking for more inspiration for beautiful autumn hikes in Switzerland, you’ll find a selection of the best routes here.
The hike starts right at Cully station, where you step out and immediately find yourself in the middle of the Lavaux vineyards. A magical moment when the scent of grapes still lingers in the air. In autumn, the grapes are usually already harvested, but that’s exactly when the vines turn into a glowing yellow-orange. At the very beginning, you have two options: either follow the road gently to the next junction or take the slightly steeper path up to Riex. Both routes are beautiful, but if you want the best views right from the start, you should definitely choose the path to Riex.
The trail mostly follows narrow, paved lanes used only by winegrowers and workers, making it calm and idyllic. On both sides stretch endless vineyards, and time and again the view opens down to Lake Geneva.
For a more relaxed experience, you can also take a ride on the Lavaux Express tourist train, which offers fascinating audio insights into the region.
After about an hour, you reach the small village of Epesses, a true gem in the heart of the Lavaux region. Surrounded by endless vineyards, it feels almost like stepping back in time, with narrow alleys, historic winegrowers’ houses, and the scent of wine in the air. From here, the hike continues mostly through the terraced vineyards, offering ever-changing views of Lake Geneva and the Alps beyond.
We did this hike in autumn, at the end of October, almost November, as the season had been unusually warm that year. Of course, this can vary depending on the weather, but in October you’ll usually find pleasant temperatures and the colors at their best.
I can also highly recommend doing the hike in the afternoon or evening: the setting sun gives the Lavaux vineyards a very special atmosphere. With the mountains in the background, the trail leading towards Montreux, and the sun behind you, it creates a mood you won’t forget anytime soon.
Another highlight awaits after about 2 hours, when you reach Saint-Saphorin. A picturesque winegrowing village right on Lake Geneva. Its narrow, winding alleys and characteristic winegrowers’ houses create an almost Mediterranean atmosphere. Particularly impressive is the Church of Saint-Symphorien, with origins dating back to the 10th century. Today, Saint-Saphorin is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland and is famous for its wine cellars, where you can taste regional wines. As seen in the photos, the village is especially magical in the evening, bathed in golden sunlight.
We could hardly believe our eyes, it felt as if time had stood still. It quickly became clear why Saint-Saphorin is counted among the most beautiful villages in Switzerland: the narrow, unique alleys and the small restaurants give the place a very special charm.
To end the day, we enjoyed a beautiful sunset above the village, with an epic view over Lake Geneva. A romantic finale to our hike. If you have time, you can continue by train to Montreux to explore the charming town or visit the legendary Chillon Castle, which even has its own ghost stories.
The Lavaux vineyards on Lake Geneva are a place you’ll never forget, whether hiking, watching the sunset, or enjoying a glass of wine. Thanks to the excellent train connections to Lausanne, Vevey, or Montreux, this trip can easily be combined with other highlights along Lake Geneva.

I came across your Instagram. 😊 Wow, I really love your blogs, especially the Trail Infos at the beginning! I’ve saved that for my next visit to Switzerland. Is it beautiful there in summer too?
We were there in the summer and it’s greener, but also beautiful, and the sunsets are romantic and beautiful too.
