The hike to Lake Palpuogna often starts at Preda train station in Graubünden Switzerland When traveling by train you can admire the Landwasser Viaduct and the Albula railway line with its impressive winding curves during the journey. After leaving the train head toward the valley and not toward the tunnel. There you will find clear hiking trail signs leading toward Lake Palpuogna (Lai da Palpuogna) which makes orientation easy right from the start of the walk Alternatively you can walk up along the road to the lake. For a more scenic and peaceful experience I recommend taking the forest trail which offers nature views and a relaxed approach to the lake. There you hike along beautiful trails surrounded by fresh blooming greenery. I do not recommend the road route as the Albula Pass has heavy traffic and is less pleasant to walk.
The ascent to the lake is about 200 meters (656 ft). Once you reach the bench with its impressive view, you’re almost there. You’ll definitely notice the bench 🙂 From this point on, the path continues straight ahead with only a gentle incline.
When you reach the lake, you’ll see a beautiful clear lake where anglers can be spotted in the morning pursuing their hobby. It is lined with many benches where you can simply switch off and enjoy the peace.
The hiking trail runs mostly right along the lake, so it’s impossible to lose your way. At one point, the path leads more into the greenery, where you’ll increasingly hear the sound of a stream approaching.
The special boardwalk you walk on stretches across half of the lake, with rushing streams feeding fresh water into it. The nature park Parc Ela is one of the largest protected areas in Switzerland, and Lake Palpuogna lies right in the heart of this beautiful region.
Once you’ve crossed half of the lake, you can choose to continue hiking up to Crap Alv, which is about 100 meters (328 ft) higher. The route follows a hiking trail, or alternatively you can walk up along the road. Both options reward you with an impressive view.
Or you can hike back along the other side of the lake to the starting point, returning to Preda station. From there, you could, for example, visit the Landwasser Viaduct or continue with another planned hike. The entire hike takes about three hours at a comfortable pace and with an easy level of difficulty.
